Separation Mixtures Lab Day Two
Hey guys I'm little late. On Friday we had sub teacher, Mrs. Zalatimo, and we start separation Lab Part B. Each group hadfollowed their Procedure which was homework.
For this lab we were going to separate heterogeneous Mixture iron, sand, and salt. I measure each of masses and calculate percentage.
Most of groups used magnet to take out iron. Then, we mixed the mixture with water and used the filter paper to take out sand.

Then, most of the groups heat the filter paper to take out moist from sand. After that we could easily measure the mass of sand and subtracted each mass of iron and sand from total mass.
However, some of the group triedto boil the left liquid which is mixture of water and salt to find salt. I thought this was going to work and we can find the salt, but the water started explode and we couldnt get salt.
Our homework over the weekend is to answer the post lab questions from Separation Lab and pre lab question from What Chemical Reaction Lab.

Separating Mixtures Lab Day One
Hey guys sorry for the late post I just got home from marching band. Anyways...

Today we started Day 1 of the Separating Mixtures Lab. Before heading to the back, however, we went over the pre-lab (which MUST include a pre-made data table!). We concluded that the best way to separate a mixture of salt, water, and sand would be to pass the solution through filter paper to catch the sand and collect the remaining salt water in a beaker. Then one would heat that beaker until the water evaporated, leaving the salt at the bottom of the beaker.
Mr. Lieberman then explained to us how mass percent works. For pre-lab question number two we found the answers to be 57.07% salt and 42.93% sand. This answer was reached by dividing the amount of tons of each substance by the total tons (when added together). For number three the answers were 171.875 pounds of flour and 103.125 pounds of sugar. This was achieved by multiplying the total (275 pounds) by .625 to get 171.875 and then subtract that from 275 to get 103.125. (Or you could use the algebraic way, but it is more difficult in my opinion.)

Mr. Lieberman then showed us all the materials we would be using for the lab were, and how to set up the filter paper. (Fold in half twice and then pull one "flap" to make a "pocket.")

Our homework tonight is to write out the procedure or steps for Part B of the lab, as well as finish the http://webassign.net/ . Mr. Lieberman won't be there tomorrow so we need to be on our best behavior for the sub. We will be finishing the lab. The next scribe is...Takashi I.

Nature of Matter Notes and Paper Clip Activity
All in all, 7th Chemistry today was pretty relaxed and relatively straightforward. I cannot believe I am saying that anything to do with Chemistry was straightforward, but there you have it. We started off class by discussing some aspects of our blog as well as the other student Chemisty blogs. Nicole C., great job by the way! Mr. Lieberman cracked some jokes as usual, which cements the fact that our class has a postive, warm, welcoming, chill, cool, and yet sophisticated environment to it. Then onto the......(pause for dramatic effect) LECTURE!!!! OH NOOO!!!
Except not because Mr. Lieberman really knows how to turn a note lecture into a fun and intriguing experience. So we carried on with the notes on the Nature of Matter. Mr. Lieberman went more in depth into the areas of Matter that we touched on in the Chemthink assignment and through our textbook reading. Mr. Lieberman did a great job of not reading off of the powerpoints :p. He explained the slides more in detail and answered any questions we had. Myself, with almost everybody else added to the powerpoint slides either on the blank space on the side of the sheet on or an seperate sheet. Here are the notes I took:

Not included in those notes are the examples that Mr. Lieberman gave us for Homogeneous and Heterogenrous mixtures. Some Homogeneous mixture examples are: Saltwater, Kool-Aid (if mixed properly), milk, yogurt, and Solutions. Some Heterogeneous micture examples are sand, skittles, and M&M's. After we finished the lecture, we went right into our next activity for the class period, which was The Paper Clip Activity. This activity had to do with Atoms, Molecules, and the Classification of Matter. So here's the scoop on this activity: there were three different kinds of paper clips;Sm=small, Cl=colored and then Jb=JUMBO!!!! What we had to do in this activity was fabricate mixtures, compounds, and elements using these different paper clips. For each problem we had to come up with a paperclip version of the compound, element, or mixture. Here is a picture of what these representations would look like:

Observation Lab: Day 2
Today's agenda for Chemistry was pretty much a continuation of yesterday's class.
We began with a small lecture from Mr. Lieberman regarding Chem Think, a website that teaches chemistry concepts through interactive, animated online activities. One of our homework assignments for today involves Chem Think, and that's to sign up [click here to learn how to sign up] and to complete the Introduction: Particulate Nature of Matter tutorial and question set. That's due tomorrow.
Mr. Lieberman also handed out a Particulate Nature of Matter worksheet and that is to work on as well.
After that lecture, we went back into our lab groups and finished up our Observation Lab.
Here are some photos to visually summarize some parts of the lab:
The first photo shows the main substances we worked with: Calcium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and phenol red.
The second shows one of the reactions that occurred: bubbles and fizzing.
The third shows what Part A of the procedure looked like before mixed.
And lastly, the fourth photo showed what the substances looked like when mixed together.
After we finished our lab, we cleaned up and went back to our desks to work on the Post-Lab questions using our data. [Here is one of Mr. Lieberman's examples of lab data found on Moodle in case you don't have it.]
So that was pretty much what went on today in class.
HOMEWORK is to finish the Observation Lab, do the Chem Think assignment as mentioned earlier, and to work on the Particulate Nature of Matter worksheet!

4. Save the image to your desktop.
5. In Blogger, click on the insert image and upload the image to the blog.

Observation Lab


Ok, so here is the first post of the year for chemistry.
Today we began our lab by answering two pre-lab questions. We also briefly discussed the importance of wearing safety goggles at all times while doing any kind of lab experiment. After answering the pre-lab questions, we experimented with calcium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and phenol red solution. We looked at each substance and recorded their descriptions in our lab books. After recording our observations, we placed the phenol red solution, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium chloride into a plastic bag where we also recorded the different reactions that took place. After part A of the experiment, students were asked to think of at least three questions that could be investigated to determine the interactions that were responsible for the changes.
DON'T FORGET, the homework for tonight is to do the WebAssign reading section 1.2 in the textbook and answering the questions that go along with the reading. It's due Friday.
